NFL: Top Five story-lines of Week Two
With Week Two at its close and Week Three on the cusp of beginning I decided to start a weekly feature where I run through my top five story-lines of the week.
QB injuries:
As Week Two began there we’d only lost one QB, with Nick Foles out indefinitely with a broken collarbone, but this week more would join him on the injury table. Big Ben Roethlisberger played half a game only to discovery his elbow was about to fall off, constantly clutching it through the second quarter. Big Ben needs surgery, out for the year. The second of the two big boy injuries involved Saints QB Drew Brees, injuring his ligaments in his thumb by high-fiving Aaron Donald when throwing the ball. The biggest thing to come out of this though will be to see how the two veteran’s chosen successor does. Mason Rudolph did not have a bad half for the Steeler’s after Big ben went out so it will be interesting to see how he fairs in Week Three, as for the Saint’s its time for Teddy Bridgewater to show what Sean Payton sees in him and take this stacked team to the playoffs in time for Brees’s return.
Mile-High madness:
The Chicago Bears travelled to Mile-High to take on the Denver Broncos as both teams were searching for their first win. Denver and Chicago went toe to toe till the fourth (both being rather lacklustre) when after several penalties following a Broncos touchdown, Joe Flacco got to throw a two-point conversation to Emmanuel Sanders to take the lead. With time on the clock Mitch Trubisky was given the chance to take the Bears down the field to win the clock, but it wasn’t that smooth, the offence stalled and Chicago were given a huge chunk of luck when Nick Chubb was adjudged to have roughed the passer on a terrible call by the officials. It all came down to a field goal, the Bears to win on a field goal? Surely not? Yes, Eddy Piniero kicked a winning field goal for the BEARS. Chicago’s kicking problems over? Hahahaha we’ll see.
Jalen’s out:
The Jacksonville Jaguars stuttered out against the Houston Texans to lose 13 points to 12. In a heavily defensive performance, all seemed well. But a lot of people missed an altercation between Jalen Ramsey and Head Couch Doug Marrone where the DB’s ended up defending Ramsey rather than their Couch. Shortly afterwards it was reported that Ramsey had requested a trade leaving a hell of a lot of questions about what the altercation involved. The whole debacle left Ramsey defending himself stating “I just want to f****** win”. No ones blaming him, where will he end up, who knows? But the biggest mouth in the NFL will be a big coup for anyone.
Browns finally kick on, but it’s not pretty:
The NFL’s biggest hype train in the Cleveland Browns finally got its first win as they defeated the depleted New York Jets at Met Life. On Odell Beckham Jr’s return the big apple he came out to play with a huge touchdown and several big plays to get the Browns over the line. The Jets were missing several defensive players and ended up down to their third string QB so the victory is hardly convincing with Cleveland stuttering often. Baker needs to get back feeling dangerous and quick.
Mahomes keeps rolling:
Pat Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs continues to play like something out of this world, even after his terrible no-look pass attempt last week. The Chiefs went 2-0 and with a victory over Jon Gruden’s Oakland Raiders with Mahomes throwing four touchdown passes for the second straight week and annoying every fantasy team owner that had to come up against him. It appears that the Chiefs are slowly building and building and the longer Mahomes continues this form with offensive guru Andy Reid the Chiefs are making a good case to go two better this year. Mahomes two-times MVP?
