Scout Report: Romain Esse
After close call with the bottom-three last campaign, Millwall have managed to steady the ship, despite changing managers. It can often be difficult to find bright lights when you sit 14th in the table, but Millwall certainly have one in the form of young winger, Romain Esse.
Just as you’d expect, when a young player begins to truly perform at in England’s second tier, the Premier League teams come looking, and that’s exactly what’s happening with Esse.
Here’s some background on the 19-year-old, and just what the electric player is all about.
Career History
Esse is a product of Millwall’s academy, having joined the club when he was just 8-years-old. The winger played his way through the ranks, before being given a chance in a pre-season friendly against Brondby, in 2022.
After impressing in that friendly, Esse was invited to be around the first team more. After continuing to impress, he made his professional debut in December of that year, as a late substitute in a league win against Watford.
The following month, the player signed his first professional contract, and was promoted to the first team, full time.
In his first season, Esse made 13 appearances in all competitions.
In 2023-24, the now 18-year-old scored his first goal in August, before being in and out of the team for the rest of the season.
This season, Esse has continued to improve, being a main stay in the Millwall side and netting five goals so far this campaign.
Style Of Play
When it comes to star potential, Esse has bags of it. Standing with a lanky frame, his electric dribbling style, pace and confidence to take anyone one, make him impossible to miss.
Playing on either wing, or in the 10 behind the striker, Esse is capable of filling almost any attacking midfield role. With the ability to dribble through players at pace, draw a foul, or even break the defence and create goals for himself or others, he has all the capabilities of a true flair player.
Whilst a constant threat going forward, he is still raw in some areas. The 19-year-old can often get heated after some of the challenges made to stop him, his close passing could do with some work and his decision making in the final third needs working on, but these are all things that come as the player matures.
Esse is a player showing his promise in a strong league. The attacker has all the fundamentals to succeed alongside already performing, it appears it is only a matter of time before he graces the Premier League, with Crystal Palace courting the player as we speak.
