A player more than familiar to fans of the EFL is Ronnie Edwards. The highly touted Peterborough defender will get his chance in the top-flight with newly promoted Southampton.

The 21-year-old joins the long list of players that Peterborough United have made a significant profit on, after plucking him from non-league football. Edwards has gone from strength to strength, being one of the League One side’s best player ever since he made his debut.

Born in Harlow, Edwards began his career at local team Barnet. He would go on to Captain the under-18s and make his senior debut at just 16 in 2019. After a successful trial, he was snapped up, and made his EFL debut in late 2020.

From this moment, there was no looker back. Edwards became a regular in the 2021-22 season, winning four club awards that year, including Player of the Season. The 21-year-old would go on to register 143 senior appearances for Peterborough, even helping the Posh to an EFL Trophy victory at Wembley in 2024.

Edwards hasn’t just made an impact at club level, being playing for England at both U-19 and U-20 level, with the young defender, starting the final of the 2022 U-19 UEFA European Championship, which England would go on to win.

The 21-year-old central defender isn’t the tallest player, standing at 5ft 11, but what he lacks in height, he makes up for in pace and composure. A player who most forwards will struggle to outrun, is incredibly mature for his age, he has the ability to win the ball in almost any position and the passing ability to spread the ball across the pitch, or play out for the back, making him tailor made for modern football.

Anyone who has watched Peterborough United in the last year or two, will more than likely agree that Edwards was always destined for the top, regardless of how Southampton’s season plays out, to get the defender for just £3 million, could turn out to be the bargain of the window.
