Scout Report: Jonathan David

Transfer rumours are rife with the 2020/21 football season fast approaching, Canadian Striker Jonathan David is one of the players on lots of clubs’ radars, including in a few in the Premier League, here’s my scout report on the young man from Ottawa.

Jonathan David, currently on the books of KAA Gent, has been named the outstanding young talent in the Jupiler Belgium Pro League by the countries media and it isn’t without warrant. David is the top scorer with 18 goals, has the most assists of U-23’s in the league with 7, that’s 25 combined goals and assists. According Wyscout, he’s doing that from an expected goals and assists of 16.2, meaning he is overachieving.

This season, David has become an all-round attacking threat, predominantly playing as part of front two, David’s skills range from dropping off to link with his strike partner, the ability to pull wide and cross and make mazy runs through the middle to create his own chances. David makes 4.6 dribbles per 90 at 51% succession rate and 1.8 progressive runs per 90, showing his ability to break through the back 4 with the ball at his feet.

As for David’s goalscoring ability, he is a quick and agile player who has learned positional acumen to a strong level, this allows him to score predatory goals due to a perfectly timed run into the box. His dribbling ability also allows him to keep the ball in pressure situations and calve out his own chances. David has 2.6 shots on average per 90 at 54% accuracy, which is a solid amount for a player who drops off to retrieve the ball during a game.

David is definitely a versatile and quick player, allowing him to play as a front two, as he has done this season, or as an attacking midfielder as he knows how to drop off, retrieve the ball and create. At 20, David has the ability to be a top player and currently has 11 goals in 12 appearances for the Canadian National Side.

The young striker seems very keen on a move away from Belgium, with Lille and Leeds United linked with the youngster, it would appear a step up is imminent.
