Why Mourinho has improved England’s best Striker

Why Mourinho has improved England’s best Striker

Harry Kane has been one of the most prolific goal scorer’s in the Premier League since his breakthrough in 2014/15 but Kane struggled in Mourinho’s system till the end of last season, but he’s now finding is feet, creating and scoring.

Jose Mourinho became Tottenham Manager in November of 2019 and Kane only scored three goals from this point till the season was paused due to COVID-19 in March. But things changed following the break with Kane bagging six goals in nine games as Spurs won five, losing only once as they elevated themselves to sixth in the table. Kane’s form has followed into the 2020/21 season with Kane scoring seven in his first eight appearances, but this isn’t what Mourinho has improved about Kane, the world knows he can score, what the Englishman has significantly improved on is his creation in and around the box.

Over recent time’s a Mourinho system is often thought of as a defensive system, and this has in fact helped Kane to be more involved with build up and creating goals. Under the Portuguese supremo, Kane has found himself often dropping back into midfield, making him more involved with Tottenham wingers like Lamela and Son. With Son especially, Kane has created a strong connection, this alongside Kane’s newfound long passing ability, has allowed the London born Striker to provide eight assists so far this season, that is already Kane’s best assisting return of his career and he’s only played eight games.

Kane now makes 2.3 key passes per 90 and 1.9 long passes per 90, both of which are up around 60% from last season, showing just what an impact him dropping into midfield is doing and with him already notching up those eight assists, it’s working.

Kane has been a prolific goal scorer for years and still is in this Spurs side but this added creation makes him even better, Kane is arguably in the prime years of his career, and with the way he’s playing, he may have found the best manager to oversee those years. At this moment, Kane is arguably playing the best football of his career at just the right time, with all the attributes he is showing, with all he has behind him, who knows where this season can take him.
